Aww he looks very impressed!

Can I do a mini-hijack and ask how long it took Caudwell to get the forms to you? My friend H sent off for them a couple of weeks back and still hasn't had them through. She wants a new lightweight manual chair so hopefully they'll accept as hers is just awful (I know, cos I have to push her when we go out together, even up a tiny slope it's tricky in her current chair, hence me helping). It also has no breaks and the wheelchair people are being stupid saying they replaced them so they won't do anything grrrr!

lou33 · 21/05/2010 16:56

great video

can i ask why you have to fund it yourself?

ds2 has a powered one for school and a manual one at home, and i havent had to pay for them (which is just as well or else i would be carrying him on my back instead)

roundthebend4 · 21/05/2010 18:47

When I spoke to wheelchair services here , they wont provide powerchairs for under 11 as not deamed approaiate .The fact that within 5 mins ds could steer/drive this thing through a door does not matter

.And becuase ds can move his manual chair himself that rules him out of one on nhs .The fact that he only does about 50 yards on the flat before his arms give out is not reverlent according to them.Mind then this is a service where after being told that ds is not sitting right that they cant see us for least 8 weeks and that if he is not in pain they probably wont change anything

Lollipop .

The very nice lady from Dragon moblity brought them with her part one and part two that needs filling in by ot or similar

But i had phoned up myself before hand and part 1 form was here in few days

thats terrible, ds is 9 and has had his power one since he was about 5, they arent that hard to use, especially as they have speed adjusters

he has the same issues wrt propelling himself in his manual one, if he does it too long it sends his arms and legs into spasms

what area are you in?

roundthebend4 · 22/05/2010 05:23

Lou I'm in East Herts byt Essex is the same

see here they seem to reckon dc under 11 can`t controll one , yet in that short film prooves ds can

After trying that chair there is just no comparrison to others we tried
.Charity funding form is going in next week and will do what ever I need to get

yep i just waiting on ot to fill form in then submitting to caudwell and am asking for forms from other charties to

OP posts:
lou33 · 22/05/2010 11:49

i am in sw aurrey

when the ot cant fund stuff, they apply to whizz kids for us, and we have never had a problem

i find it amazing they think anyone under 11 is not able to control a power chair, thats really shit

lou33 · 22/05/2010 11:52

i mean sw surrey (didnt have my glasses on )

roundthebend4 · 22/05/2010 12:15

Yeah there on my list to ask towards a grant to

Yep I know and even then at 11 there is a lot of hoops to jump through.

OP posts:
LollipopViolet · 22/05/2010 12:48

roundthebend, thanks for replying. My mate isn't under an OT, so that's slightly worrying that part has to be filled in by them. All she wants is a lighter chair so she can lift it into a car herself and be able to propel herself for longer and up slopes etc. Still, we shall see, hopefully she gets the forms soon and she'll know what to do with them

Out of curiosity, what hoops do you then have to jump through if your child is 11 and needing a powerchair? Surely if they can control one, it's all good?

roundthebend4 · 22/05/2010 18:28

Nope if they can self propel even for very short distances then according to here that means not eligable for one

OP posts:
lou33 · 22/05/2010 20:03

i dont understand it, they gave ds2 his power one because they said self propelling for more than a few minutes was bad for him, it would tense his muscles up more and cause more issues

how do they decide these rules ffs?

glittery · 22/05/2010 22:21

i suspect its probably a get out to save them some money.

up here the child has to be able to drive round an assault course with humps and bends etc their first time in the chair and if they cant complete it they dont get one!

thats the reason we went the charity route for ds's first chair so he can have a couple of years practice and WS have already said if he gets good enough they will provide him a powerchair and a manual backup!
