Hi. W is just finishing his reception year, can recognise all letters, read simple words and add up and take away using numbers up to 10. We are so proud of him. However last week was called into the school and asked to sign the special needs register - I feel we have really let him down, but don't really know what else he should be dong - anyone able to help??

In our current reception class he would be be under average on the reading (but ahead of most of the summer borns) and just above average on the maths. So fine in my book! I think you need more info from the school.

Have they said what their particular concerns are? From what you've posted I wouldn't have concerns (not a teacher though) so I wonder if perhaps they're concerned about a different area of his development?

My two scored well on the academic stuff but one had obvious problems with fine motor skills and both needed help with social skills.

I would make an appointment and ask the staff for more information about their concerns and for suggestions of what you could do with him.

Apologies for the over-use of "concern(s)" in my post!
