have just be reading Marnes thread and didnt want to hijack .
I have DS1s salt report for his statement. it states "ds1 will benefit from an educational setting where staff are experienced in working with children with severe speech and language impairments and have knowledge of makaton. he will continue to benefit from daily opportunities to work on anindividual basis and as apart of a small group. staff would benefit from working in close collaboration witha salt to adapt the curriculum to ds1's language level and provide a programme that can be integrated into hos daily curriculum"
it does also say in the statement attention, listening, play and social skilss are within normal limits and receptive language is age appropriate.
it does mention 20 hrs a year but adds this is for a mainstream setting if he attends special special the above provision will be reconsidered to take into account.....
Does this look like a recommending speech unit report bearing in mind his area of concern is expressive labnguage.
is the key wording the daily opportunties and small groups.
help please

I think it is a bit vague and the LEA may pounce on parts like 'it does also say in the statement attention, listening, play and social skilss are within normal limits and receptive language is age appropriate' and say MS is appropriate. Sorry!

Think where it says ds teachers working in close collbration with salt and 20 hrs indicates ms especially as your local school on ms side is used to children from on site unit mixing in class also when they talk about incorprating into his daily schedule

do you have any other reports hate to say it but they might refuse statement for ms if that's ds only needs as think if ds needs less than certain amount of hrs think 15 there sat needs be met on school action plus

suggestion phone herts ask be put through to specialist speach teacher team have chat with them

small groups is anything from 1- to what ever they decide

ds used words like he will need rather than benefit as was to easy for lea to read as well he might

sodit · 16/05/2010 12:23

ta didnt even know had specialist speach team. will be onto them tmw.
only have ed pysch report and old reports. ed pysch reports state above average non verbal skills. becomes very frustrated when not understood and this leads to behaviour problems.
i know that is only the salt report and have to wait for statement to go through it with the changing words from benefit to need.
just feel left in limbo waiting for it to come through and then start wondering if the unit is right for him anyway. aarrrghhh!!!

YEp call herts county council school lines. They will be ones that liase with ds school if he goes to ms try asking for Linda Arnold also One of them sits on the panel when they decide places so they might even know of your ds Along with someone from the lea

How much work/support do you think he needs daily on his speech that be the main thing

When is provisonal due

sodit · 16/05/2010 13:55

he needs daily practice but he is more than willing to do that a home, but he also enjoys doing it at school and will show me what he has done but repeating the sounds/ words he has done.
he does seem to be improving and i can understand more even though that may just be me improving. the thing is when we went to the unit he was happiest in the ms classroom he went straight off and started playing with another boy and i feel like i will be taking him away from the other children. his is at a big nursery and although they have group time (for those with language problems) he also thrives with all the other children and i feel that they set him a good example by their use of language.
oh god i am persuading myself he doesnt need the unit.
i suppose i need to do a for and against sheet and ask someone all my queries.
Provisional due mid june, so final mid august which i think would put it too late for september start.

In reception year know they spend at least part of the time in ms class with child led activtys so would still be able to mix ,

did you get chance ask how many spaces they will have can't remember if they said 2 or 3 and truth after seeing unit don't blame him one bit Ms side did seem nicer .but if you go with ms will need to make sure statement is very tight because chances of getting 20 hrs without be tough

sodit · 16/05/2010 15:59

they did say 10 overall and quite a few year2 were moving on. they werent sure as county decides, i know 1 is filled by 1 of his friends at nursery. i know will probably end up retyping statement for it to be checked on here as well as checked at sossen etc.

yes Giles has 10 overall but only 3 spaces available for September .2 now that ds has his

FuckingNinkyNonk · 16/05/2010 22:05

ds1 will benefit from a holiday in the caribbean and horseriding lessons, it doesn't mean he NEEDS them.

bloody 'benefit'. Get that taken out.

So:

DS1 will need an educational setting where staff have a minimum of x years experience in working with children with severe speech and language impairements and have attended at least 2 days training in the last year.

All staff that come into contact with ds1 will need to have a minimum standard of x in makaton.

DS will need to have 30 minutes daily of groupwork whilst supported by a 1:1 at this time. He will also need to be given opportunities of no more than 30 minutes daily of individual work.

Staff will be required wot work in close collaboration with a SALT who will make weekly visits to work with ds for 45 minutes, and liase with staff for 15 minutes. In addition, she will set the programme for ds1 and deliver training on a termly basis for 2 hours to his keyworker and 1:1 who will ensure that he receives 30mins daily of specific 1:1 SLT therapy.

Forget the 20 hours a year. 20 hours of what exactly? It does not mean a speech unit. It means mainstream sorry.

FuckingNinkyNonk · 16/05/2010 22:08

Oh forgot, - you're in my neck of the woods. Absolutely don't trust them.

FuckingNinkyNonk · 16/05/2010 22:09

Talk to IPSEA. They know Herts and their games.

roundthebend4 · 17/05/2010 05:52

Nikynonk we. Mustall be reasonably close together ds provisonal statement was full of he should have , it now reads he must have

Though to be fair herts actually asked me what speech unit I wanted though don't think they realised I visit every one in county but in the end one they identified as what they felt be most approiate thanks to speaclist teacher input actually was .They have made all changes salt wise I asked for and added in where they forgot to mention ds uses a wheelchair and I got place in unit without to many problems

Mind when moved into Herts did inform them that ds will not be attending ms and dumped all my evidence on them and muttered how quick do we go to tribunal ,so far there playing ball . Mind now got sort out Ot input

FuckingNinkyNonk · 17/05/2010 09:16

roundthebend You haven't got any OT because there isn't any. Where it appears in a child's statement the LA have to buy it in privately. That is why it is so hard to get, - it equals pure cash.

sodit · 17/05/2010 13:16

had a good think last night. Have decided am worrying to much.

  1. havent even got provisional yet
  2. i definately want him to stay at nursery until xmas so final statement due in aug is good.
  3. he is improving so much that deciding now what is the best option is what is worrying me. who knows what he will be like in 7 months time. 7 months ago he couldnt even say yes no and mummy. think i have to take one step at a time, wait for the provisional and make sure that is water tight so will be harrasing you all in middle of june. Thanks for all the help especially roundthebend
