We have sold our house and due to move to a new area. The house we are buying is in one county; the school that has provisionally offered DD and DS places is just over the border into another county.

Which County is the responsible LEA for education - where we live or where DC go to school?

Sorry this is probably a really stupid question . Only asking as I will be requesting DD to be assessed as soon as we arrive (slightly futile where we are now).

Would really appreciate the answer to this.

Oooh, no - ask for the assessment to happen now. The new area will just take over where they left off.

Don't know the answers to the rest, sorry, but good luck!

It will be the county where you live.

DS goes to a school in the neighbouring LA and I made the mistake of requesting SA from his school's LA at first! They were helpful enough to write back and tell me I needed to make the request to the LA where I live.

Thank you sugarcandymountain - that was what i thought and was hoping the answer would be. Someone told me i had it wrong so wanted to be sure.

I previously chatted to someone on here who said that the lea in the county we are moving to are quite efficient re the statementing process - so fingers crossed!

Gettingmoresleep. Thought we'd started the process last October but found out fortnight ago service request not sent off by school. Hopefully we'll be in new house mid-June so not too long.

New school seem really pro SN - current school aren't. Am so tired of fighting here, but feel somehow more confident and ready to take on the battle afresh in pastures new. We'll also be in an area with a specialist epilepsy nurse which will make a huge difference.

Thank you.

Yep, but June puts you 2 months behind. Apply now and the 6 months still applies as the current LA will pass on all their stuff to the new one.

daisy5678 · 25/04/2010 23:35

I mean apply to your current LA, by the way.

roundthebend4 · 26/04/2010 06:28

If you can get current Lea to agree to placement where you want do it now then new lea have duty of care to maintain

we moved and sadly lea where we lived had held renewal but not issued statment with changed now new lea have restarted procedures though they not reassess just using the evidence they have before them from review

Though on plus side they have agreed to ds attending speech unit now just got to name one

Gettingmiresleep

it's not always the case if no statement is issuref prio to move mew Lea can restart whole new process what I would do is make contact with nee lea now inform them your moving into area

lou031205 · 26/04/2010 21:42

newlife4us, I think you are moving to my county? Is the town P? If so, I would just contact the SEN service at the LEA and, as suggested, tell them that you are definitely moving to the area, and ask when you can request assessment from - i.e. do you have to be paying the council tax, etc. or do you just have to have agreed a purchase, whatever.

Thank you all for your messages.

Roundthebend4. If i didn't currently live in one of the two worst counties in the country for SEN i would apply now. I've asked for DD to be assessed here, the last time was earlier this month but its been refused. School are lying about DDs progress and ability. We don't have an epilepsy nurse here so no one to dispute school's and ed psyche's assessment if done here. Concerned that if assessed here by ed psyche (who is very dismissive and not particularly pleasant) we would move with an assessment saying that she doesn't need help which new lea may rely on to refuse further assessment.

I've spoken to epilepsy nurse in new area who is lovely and has said that she has camped outside the lea in the past and will do so for DD if necessary. (Thank you lou311205 - i took your advice and phoned the hospital directly.)

Lou311205 - Yes we are moving to P. Finally found somewhere last week and due to move in June. DD is so excited about moving to new school! I was going to wait until we get down there, but will phone new lea this week to ascertain when we can start the process. Just want her to get help asap - she's now in year 3 and had no support since she started in reception.

Thank you ladies - will get on to new lea tomorrow. Will let you know how i get on.

Sorry roundthebend4 - i meant getting miresleep.

Think i need more sleep myself! DD now has something wrong with bloods - waiting to find out on Friday. Not sure if her liver has deteriorated or whether leukopaenic again, can't be her platelets or we would have been called straight back in for transfusion again. Why don't they just tell you rather than letter saying something wrong - aaaaarrrrggghhh!
