Hi All,

Sorry I haven't been around for a while just got a new computer so back online!!

Went to SALT today with little one he is 3 and only says mum, no and has started doing animal sounds this was his secound appointment he had his initial assessment 7months ago.

Today she just seemed more worried in getting his anger/frustration sorted we were recommended pecs at initial assessment and DS is not co-operating at all in this he does take you and show you what he wants by pointing she suggested going to a drop in group which would help me talk to my son (i know how to talk to him surely??? and we have been using the book it takes 2 to talk).

She is referring him to someone for his frustration to come out to the home and give us advice problem is i am sure his frustration is down to not being able to communicate she did say i could try makaton if i could find somewhere that is running a course. But that is all she has said so again feel like i am left in the lurch so to speak.

I have found somewere that is running a vourse on makaton for beginners so question is do i try that or doing i just carry on as we are just so frustrated as want to help my son so much was hoping someone with similar experiences could give me some ideas.

Thanks

Makaton helped ds2 with his receptive language, it gave him a visual aid to the spoken word.
Does yourr ds haave dificulty with understanding.

DS2 still finds signs useful in busy environments when there is alot of noise & he struggles with processing language.

It helped with simple things at preschool, so they always sign STOP OR Sit Down as well as saying it. It definatly helped ds2 with following instructions.

He never really copied the signs back but I suppose they helped.

Hi

Thanks for your replies little one can understand simple tasks but ask him to do something he hasnt done before and we hit problems so we have to show him what we want him to do.

The development centre he attends have often reported that he has said a new word whilst he was there but he doesnt seem to say that word again just feel so frustrated as when we were at speech therapy today she kept saying that i need help to manage his behaviour as he gets frustrated and as i said to her he gets frustrated when he is trying to get us to understand what he is saying just felt like she was saying I could cope with his behavour which i can.

He has trouble with swallowing foods as well and holds this in his mouth untill you tell him to spit it out he was seen by the feeding and swallowing team and they said that because he has hypotonia it could be that that is effecting his speech and his swallowing but SALT didnt seem to have an opinion either way.
His way of communicating what he wants to us at the moment is he will take you by the hand and show you what he wants sorry to go on just feel like i have been left in the lurch by SALT as she made me feel like i was wasting her time. Sorry to rant a bit.

No nothing have been told someone will come out to help manage DS behaviour and that we can go to a drop in centre to see if he is suitable to go on a course that teaches me to talk to him and that i could try makaton if i could find a course

It is universally accepted that one of the main causes of frustration and Challenging Behaviour is difficulty communicating. FGS! How does she expect someone to help you sort out his frustration UNTIL she does something more active about communication??? I agree that it is well worth going on PECs course. Makaton is also great but be careful not to introduce too much at once and let whatever you start with have a chance to get established. We use PECs and Makaton and started (many years ago) with PECs. DS uses both, sometimes for the same things sometimes for different things iyswim.
