I saw on one of your threads that you had complained that OT wouldnt help with your DC and I wondered how you went about it, and what you said.

My DS2 is 3 and was referred by his Paed in December so that they could help him learn hw to use a spoon - he refuses to be spoonfed but cant use one himself. On Tuesday I recieved a letter from the OT saying that as he has a general development delay they wouldnt be able to help him. I am really appauled by this, mainy because all I really want to know is how to help him. They have said that Portage will be able to help him, but his portage worker said she would try, but its not something she has done before.

Are you hoping to change thier minds, or just wanting them to understand how let down you feel?

Thanks

Hi ShadeofViolet
I initially wrote to the Head of OT in my area as the Paed wouldn't even refer me, telling me they dont deal with kids who are being assessed for ASD.

I wrote asking for clarification on this and asking about Sensory Integration Therapy. They replied telling me it is not an effective therapy and put in a few whopping great lies. They also advised me to seek out a private OT(I had already done this but haven't told them).

So, I have written a long letter asking them to back up their false claims. I have also asked them to pay for private OT since they cant meet the needs of my child. I have changed my demands from Sensory Integration to help with functional stuff.
I am still waiting for their reply...
Next step is Disability Discrimination Act. Watch this space!

Do not be fobbed off if you feel your child needs OT input. As Flying Duchess will agree, everything is a battle.

Thanks for the replies

I dont really know if DS needs an OT's imput, but he needs some help from someone but noone seems to know who can help, its just not them!

I would like to do somethng to make them address the shortfall in thier care. I dont blame the OT , they are overstretched and therefore basically can only take on the bare minimum of cases.

If all the parents who feel the service is inadequate write in to complain then this should be taken into consideration for future strategies.

Thanks WatingforGodot - I think I will write and complain about the lack of care. It might not change it, but as you say it might do a little good?
