We started using PEC's with dd2 when she was 3 (at the time non-verbal), she picked it up very fast. I make my own PEC's cards. The best way to start is by using photo's for things that might motivate him, with my dd2 we started with food so we had a photo of her plate, table and a selection of her favorite foods and then we moved on to toys (so she could select a toy to play with), within a few weeks dd2 could communicate with us (which she could not do at all before). Amost a year on and she is still using the PECS along side her speech and can now ask for things using a sentance strip and by asking with her voice.

PEC's is a great form of communication if it works for the child.

Dd's SALT supplied us with a PEC's folder and some symbols but i make some of my own either by drawing them or printing of pictures from the internet. Invest in a laminater so the cards will last (dd2 tends to chew/eat them or get sticky fingers on them).

Ds1 uses PECS - he's 10 now. But it's hard to implement without training/help.

If you can do the 2 day pyramid basic PECS workshop it is well worth it.

hi, i'm quite new on here and we started using pecs last week (as it was recommended by other MNers on a previous thread). So far I feel like I am making it up as I go along as I haven't had time to read the book and my SALT had barely heard of it (!), but ds1 got the idea almost straight away! I have ordered a communication board with 50 pecs from ebay, can't really comment as it hasn't arrived yet, but there are a few sellers on there that make the pecs for you if you are pressed for time and they seem to have some good ideas if you are looking for inspiration! Also check youtube for video clips of people using pecs or talking about it, that helped me too.

Hi, I am new on here too. DS1's portage worker introduced PECS when he was not yet 2.5 so quite young. I've struggled to move him on from using the biscuit card, but he does use that one perfectly - gets it off the fridge and finds me to ask for a biscuit. He will use others - eg bubbles when prompted. I'm fed up waiting for SALT/nursery/outreach etc to help, so I've bought a lamintor (£9 from asda - bargain) and am making my own to try and develop his use of them. I'd be interested in any tips, and will look into the pyramid course.
