DS hates suncream!

My DS is 6 and has AS. He is very sensitive to touch and often spends his time at home with no clothes on whatsoever other than his pants! My problem at the moment is his aversion to sun creams. He had a tantrum this morning when I tried to apply some before school. He frantically wipes it off or washes as soon as I let him go-and trying to explain why he needs it is hopeless! Anyone else have this problem?

yep- but just slapped it on- actually he's ok these days. Have you tried the spray ones- ds1 quite liked those.

I'll get on of those and see Jimjams-I hadn't thought of that. It has become more of a problem this year-he has never liked them but we used to be able to distract him and get him to leave it alone once it was on!

The spray on ones are more watery and less gloopy and sticky.

your ds sounds just like mine- he is 8 and is quite happy to walk around in nothing but undies-even in the middle of winter,he too screams when i put suncream on - i always tell him what time hes having it applied and he still doesnt like it but he doesnt scream as much

I'm afraid I've been rather brutal with J and told him that if he doesn't have suncream on he might get skin cancer. Shock treatment works with him but obviously it might not work for others and could scare them. Each to their own.

These days I use P20 once a day sun protection. You have to apply it 90 minutes before exposure to the sun so I do it in the morning when he's getting dressed and I don't have to top him up for the rest of the day. That's quite useful when you've got a wriggler. It also dries completely in a couple of minutes and isn't sticky the way some creams are, so sand etc won't stick to it.

I have to be very careful what I say to my DS as he can become extremely worried and anxious about things. I have told him that his skin will be sore without the cream, but he cannot take this is when he is objecting violently to the feel of it-it seems to over-ride any reasoning we can do.
jenk-my DS is also oblivious to the cold-I often feel cold just looking at him in the winter!

Boots spray for men doesn't need rubbing in and it's very watery. My brother is 19 and has AS and this is the only one he'll tolerate.

Tiggiwinkle, my brother is the same, no one dare mention skin cancer as we'd never hear the end of it!
