Does anyone know what help we could have for are 9yr old son? He has just been diagnosed with dyspraxic and is borderline add.

Thank you. It's just you get the report and that's it we don't know where to go now and with 2 other children it's so hard.

Have you looked at the Dyscovery Centre website - there is quite a lot of useful info there.

What sort of thing does your son need? Have you been offered anything by NHS and are you thinking of going privately? You should probably try and get help from an occupational therapist if he is dyspraxic. How is his speech and language - does this need any help?

The book "Dyspraxia the hidden handicap" by Amanda Kirby has a lot of useful info as well. Also "Dyspraxia" by Madeleine Portwood.

Ds has just turned 9 but is like a toddler he has really bad tantrums so we do time out where he has to sit on the stairs but he will carry on screaming and banging his head against the wall if it is a really bad paddy then we put him in his room but he just smashes that up and when he shares with older ds it's not fair on him. School wise he has little understanding he did mock sats this year and got 2b for writing and 2a for reading, that's what year 2 children should be getting. He's on a iep and goes out for 30min in a group 4 times a week. Hope this is enough for now and i haven't bored you!

How did you get the diagnosis in the first place? Has the person who gave it to you not offered you any help?

The website and books I have suggested do have some help with behaviour that goes with dyspraxia. Presumably your son has motor problems too - has anyone offered you any help with this - you ought to see a physio and an OT at least for an assessment.

Sorry it's hard to suggest a lot without knowing more about where you are with everything. Feel free to tell more - you're not boring us .

I wrote to the lea 2yrs ago after the school wouldn't listen he was seen by a consultant at local hospital who said he showed signs of being autistic but then nothing happened. His teacher this year is the first to say there is a problem i went to doc's but they didn't want to know so i swapped doc's took ds and letter i had wrote 2yrs ago and she referred him to child and adolesent we were seen quite quickly and they diagnosed him as dyspraxic and boderline add. There trying to get us a caseworker but haven't heard anything. I just don't want it left another 2yrs for anything to happen. Oh the school are bringing in the school pysch in oct.

Have you asked for NHS referrals to occupational therapy?

Do you think you would be able to go privately for help, in which case I would look for private Occupational therapists or go somewhere like the Dyscovery Centre.

In the meantime I would look at the books I suggested and see if they can help you at all. I don't know much about ADD but I have read quite a lot about dyspraxia as my nearly 4year old has a lot of dyspraxic type symptons.

Thanks for the reply's. we couldn't afford to go privatley, how would you go through the nhs is it the doc's? I will have a look for those books Saker thanks. Jayzmummy he is not on any meds. My eldest ds has been away on school trip the last couple of days and you'd think things would be easier with only 2 but ds has been a sod. He broke a collector football plate but it was ok cos it was only in half! he said.
