As far as I know all the special schools use makaton or sign-along and some mainstream units do too.

you need Moondog?

Phoenix4725 · 04/01/2010 16:29

yeah i think , trouble is ds does not need a special school as cognitave devlopement is normal

Hi phoenix, DS2 attends mainstream where they all sign alongside speech, in fact they used makaton throughout the recent assembly, it was lovely.

The difficulty is of course that makaton is not as effective as BSL or normal speech, and therefore DS does miss out on some of what is happening in the classroom, although he is fully supported all day.

We have just gone down the route of a communication aid and are waiting confirmation of funding, as once we start to progress on to BSL he will need to attend a non mainstream setting. I have no real issue with this btw, but the ones near us are actually quite dreadful and none suit DS's needs.

DS's SALT went into school to arrange a training session with all staff (including lunchtime supervisors, dinner ladies etc) one evening and they have used it from day one. I think they have learned more from the copious amounts of something special they all watched when he was in reception.

ah ds has crap salt .And ms here said they would bring it into school but there not i sat through christmas concert only person signing was him so not exactly inclusive.

slightlycrumpled it has been mentioned that ds uses Bsl as at ican school he picked up paget gorman signs fast and they fely he would do well with Bsl b ut here were experincing reverse disablity they don`t want him as hes not deaf

Aaah phoenix that is our problem too. DS2 does in fact have a moderate hearing loss but is not deaf enough for hearing impaired school, so we looked at the other options and they would leave him with no peer group whatsoever. In our area anyway there is a massive gap in provision for children like ours.

I hope you get somewhere soon.

What does the HT say about lack of signing etc. DS1 had already been at the school for a few years so I had the advantage of already having a good relationship with the school before DS2 started which helped alot.

Phoenix4725 · 04/01/2010 17:29

dd
is in same school but year 2 , well they did 3 hrs of signing vbefore ds came to thats all his lsa has had to
.There admitting there finding it hard to bring in to school they had right idea but practlites of it when ds is only one signing in school of 300 , 89 in reception 29 in ds class . They feel they cant impose on other dc to sign and quite few parents are actually against it some them are in ds class to

yep same here but ds more and more is being left out at school in class and in playground as he cant keep up either physically but dont want special schools as he is caperable as others

will continue looking around and will go in guns blazing but polite on the review

Phoenix, I think its just a case of looking at individual schools as it is very much down to the ethos of the school & the leadership.

DS2 is at a small village primary But it has always been very inclusive & all teachers & TA's sign. makaton & visual timetables commonly used throughout the school.

The school is NOT a specialist SEN school, just ahs a good local reputation so is the school of choice for us sn parents.
In a school of less than 100 children (reception - yr 4) there are about 5 children with various sn's. Also small class size 19 in ds2's class.

We are in Suffolk coastal, would happily tell you which school if intersted in a move!

Have you shopped around other ms schools in your area?

Phoenix4725 · 04/01/2010 20:37
