Stimming too much?

DS (2.9 and ASD) has always enjoyed periods where he seems to disappear into his own world and he either sits or lies and rubs his legs together (mainly his inner thighs) by moving his left leg up and down.

Normally I can distract him and encourage him into something else, but the last couple of days, which are incidentaly the days he attends playschool I havent been able to stop him, and he gets very upset if I try. Yesterday he was doing it for over two hours and today the same. He seems shut off from everything and when I try to pick him up his legs are locked in that position.

Do you think it might be because he is tired out from playschool?
