I haven't had any training apart from ten minutes with the SALT last week. DS has some words but will not use them to request.

We've started with one card (biscuit) what she said to do was

  • engineer the situation so that he sees a biscuit that he wants but don't offer it to him.
  • when he reaches for the biscuit the prompter puts the card in his hand & helps him hand it to me
  • I say biscuit & give him the biscuit

but where is the card supposed to be at the beginning - with the prompter or do I give him the card when he notices the biscuit? He's so fixated on the biscuit that I don't think he notices the card - he'll usually reach for it with which ever hand doesn't have the card then run off as quickly as possible. I don't think he's learning anything.

I'm going to look at Cauldwell, we're well under their income threshold, but ds doesn't have a diagnosis yet.

Calling back on Monday to see if we can get someone else to cover her.

Apparently we're not going to get any more SALT from the community team we've been seeing (well we had a useless assessment then one session) because we're supposed to be seen by the Language Development Team at the CDC - they have a waiting list of 3 months, we're on the list. Basically the more severely affected your child is the less help you get.

So that's the end of that - it's down to us to sort something out in the meantime.

Starlight I'm going to be writing letters this weekend. The only reason they gave us the one session was because they thought I was going to make a complaint (this time I actually will).

I want weekly 1 to 1 sessions at home (ds does not do hospitals), with an experienced SALT, until the CDC sessions start ... cat's chance in hell.

OMG some good news at last!

(SALT is coming on Friday but that isn't the good news). I've just found out that my brilliant portage worker is both PECS & makaton trained, hugely experienced, interested in what will help Jasper specifically, very cross with the SALT for their general crapness (& rubbish attempt at PECS 'training'), knows lots about how to get funding for training & will actually turn up every week for as long as we need her (or ds is 5). She even knows about BIBIC & ABA (first HCP I've met who has even heard of either )

She's done three hours of assessments with ds now & I'm seeing her again tomorrow to discuss PECS/makaton/training etc.

dont give up yet if it works it will help with the frustraiton you both feel. try giving the choice of 2 things they really want, they will have to make a choice and give the correct PEC to get what they want. i have a 3 year old who has been using PECS for about a year on and off. she will use it well for a while then just stop for months and then start again. i keep a velcro board on the wall with PECS like drink, dummy, her comfort blanket, DS lite. so she can ask for the most needed things and add ones like dinner near lunch time so only the PECS she is allowed are placed on the board. or banana or chocolate roll for after lunch is put on when eating lunch ect. i have also made a travel verson just punch a hole in the corner and attach to a stretch type keyring and keep on your bag.
