Semantic-pragmatic language disorder = mild autism???

Whao! I'm confused again well a bit.
My ds 'salt says ds has semantic/pragmatic language disorder.
So she writes down a few websites addy for us to check out. And hey presto ASD kept cropping up. It seems all verbal ASD persons have some semantic/pragmatic difficulties, and it also seems that MANY persons with sem/pragm language disorder have some 'autistic tendancies' !!!

So what does that mean in relation to my ds' dx of mild asd by the paed?

I get the impression that a semantic/pragmatic language disorder with autistic tendancies and HFA sort of overlap each other. But where do you draw the line between the 2?

Any views would be appreciated, thanks ladies.

its just part of the autism itself the way they interpret language etc

if its just language disorder they are looked into to make sure they are not ASD which they would need to have other traits to be dx with ASD iykwim

my ds has this also or did do has improved hugely his was because he is ASD its hard to explain

you can have tendencies but clearly do not have ASD this can be through actions or other but to have ASD it is very clear and you need to display more than 1 ASD trait to be dx where as ASD tendencies could just be few minor traits not enough to dx as other actions dont point towards typical ASD actions

i hope you can understand what im saying i know what i mean to say but find it hard to write out and make sense lol

As I understand it - they used to diagnose SPLD separately regarding it as a language problem rather than ASD, but these days they regard it as being on the autistic spectrum. Given the way ASD gets diagnosed (that it's not done by something completely objective like a blood test!) I would say it's a very fine line indeed between the 2.
