communication aids or signing

took ds to see specialist salt and tried some communcation aids out .ds caught on fast and must admit was odd hearing it.But he found them to slow with having to switch the boards all the time and he switched to signing as could get his point across quicker.

Am in 2 minds if go ahead with communcation aid can see him getting more frustrated with it as not quick enough .

has anyone else tried them or decided to stick with the makton.

He does have motor control issues but can operate tracker ball ok his signs arnt perfect but are recognisable.Have wonderd about maybe switching him to Bsl as its more complete anyone else thought of it

I would do both.

We use a VOCA, Makaton, tapping (I say x or y tapping in separate places as I say x and Y and then he touches the spot representing the word), photos, typing, pictures. IE Anything!

I saw an article today about a child who has used an itouch with a special app. I am about to search (as I have an itouch).

oh and PECS of course!

they wanted my ds to have a speech board but after much thight we decied agaist it for two reasons one it was not quick enought o give him what he wanted and i yhought it might stop him talking altogther we went with signing and even though he has fine and gross motor skills delays its going really well

.We do use pecs to suprised me how quick he picked it up yes and makton took long time for him to pick up but now he has hes flying with it sat down and worked out he has around 100 signs he is using

vicky ds was getting frustarted with ones we tried today was looking for one that might work with laptop and as clicks on something opens another page up rather than having to change the boards
