ds1 2.8 is non verbal and is starting using pecs and makaton. he picks the signs up quite quickly but uses his own version of them. eg pig he rubs his nose rabbit he scratches the top of his head. today we were looking at a book i asked who says oink oink etc with animal noises and he was able to point to the various animals. i asked him ds1 push the button on the washing machine without simplifing it for him which he did. so his receptive language is getting better but his still non verbal he is trying to copy sounds but cant seem to make the noises he wants. just wondering if you have any sugggestions what to say to the salt tmw as my mind goes totally blank at these things.

how good is he with the pecs? is it worth asking about using the sentance strip yet? though i know ben had a lot of symbols before he used the sentance strip, the first they added was just i want so he needed to do i want biscuit rather than just biscuit. worth a thought if your ds has a lot of symbols and you want to move him on? ben picked up the symbols quite quickly but i sort of stopped using the signs so much as ben had hardly any proper ones and mostly random made up ones that were nothing like the proper ones so i asked to concentrate on symbols ready fro nursery etc so he would be able to communicate as his signs were very dubious! or ask about a homework kind of book to help with making sounds? we had a book our salt made us with just a few simple words which we did with him everyday until he gradually got them?? or ask for games you can play for encouraging right sounds? like blowing bubbles to help with moving nmouth for different shapes etc?

he only started pecs this week at his sn playgroup so still in the protesting stage but he understands what he needs to do. like very much the sounds book. have been trying the blowing bubbles but it is an excuse to throw water every where so not much practice. will try with balls of paper but ds2 (10 months) crawls about looking for things to eat and paper is his favourite along with cat biscuits. thanks for that
