Does anyone have experience of a child with moderate HIE? I've read medical articles but I just wondered about real life experiences. A friend of mine has just had a baby with this and I'm just wondering how things might pan out for her.

My son was diagnosed with HIE grade 2 at birth. (horrendous birth!) He has just turned 9yrs. He has developed fine, no concerns, no problems and is a real treasure! The last year or so he has been struggling at school with basic studies. He tries v hard but is behind his peers quite noticably. The school have identified this problem but he is getting no real individual help from them. No one can say that Yes it's his HIE. I just thought that maybe he was a slow learner, fine, but I am now wondering whether HIE plays a part. There seems to be no one I can go to to get an answer or assessment that I can take back to the school. School advised GP - GP says school issue. We are currently about to pay for private tuition to see if this may help but this is really beyond our finances long term. Does anyone have an older child with educational problems. Any advice would be ace.

New to Mumsnet - reading postings completely out of sinc!! We were told that my son Jamie may have cognitive/mobility difficulties due to HIE 2 caused at birth but it was always 'a waiting game'to see. He has just turned 9 years old and physically and mentally he is fine, brilliant, wonderful, happy...! We had sort of forgotton about HIE until recently when it became apparent that he was struggling a bit at school. We don't know whether this is due to HIE and are currently exploring where we go from here. Thinking back now I am crying as I can remember how difficult and worrying it all was initially as Jamie was also injured facially at birth (forceps) but, re HIE, worse case scenarios don't always happen. I have a fantastic son! X
