"Support Worker" confusion

Do any of you hire/employ a support worker/carer in the home? What I mean is, have effectively become an employer to a carer?

I am trying to sort out a carer in our home, but I don't think being an employer is a good idea - won't I be liable for anything going wrong? Such as being sued etc.

I am really confused about this.

Thanks

We employ a support worker using direct payments and have some sort of liability insurance through 'fish' insurance. The policy is paid by Shaw Trust who manage our direct payments and costs about £70 per year, it offers protection on both sides.

Sorry for the delay in replying, it was my ds birthday plus Easter etc.

Thanks for the info. I am nervous about employing someone - I might look into agencies for this.

I shall look into the insurance, thank you.
