We used a cot bed and set the mattress as low as poss, then took one side off.

I have a junior bed with a tomy bed guardthat has been tied to the base of the bed with cable ties so ds2 is really safe and cannot fall out. The bed its self is very low anyway bit the bed guard gives a bit more saftey. It does say on the bed guard, only to be used on divans but it works perfectly well like this as it can not be moved by him. this is the one we have with this bed guard.

We got a toddler bed from Ikea, they are great as they are really low and most of them come with sideguards as well. Also, put the cot mattress next to the bed incase they do roll out.
