Advise for a friend

her ds was being assessed for ASD, they ruled it out as he plays with other kids. he is now 3 and doesnt speak at all. wel lhe has odd sounds but no words.

used to live downstairs from him and his mum, and back then they thought he was deaf. that has been ruled out. he is being assessed at local CDC.

Anyone has any suggestions?

I thought that children didn't start to play with other children until they were about 3. Until then it's usually playing alongside others isn't it? (Although I'm ready to be corrected )

I'm not saying that it is ASD, just that this seems like an odd reason to rule it out in a young toddler.

Does seem a somewhat strange reason. Not talking can't be ignored though so hopefully she will get somewhere. I know I'm a stuck record but what about a look at the NAS website? How is she feeling about it? Could be lots of other things going on in a child not talking but without other ASD pointers.

thats what i thought. he is starting enrichment nursery lessons this week, so maybe they will pick up more there. i have posted about him before, and when i saw him and his mum last week, it is bleeding obvious just looking at him that he isnt NT. but what is it? I am just thinking ASD, as he seems similar to a lad who visits my neighbours, who is autisic. (we have a wide range of people with varying abilities here, so we're well covered on eductation kids about different needs)

friend doesnt have a PC so she cant visit the NAS site. will try and find some info for her, atm she is just dealing with it,. she knows he has 'problems' (hate saying that as he is lovely) and just really wants to know what. without dx its gonna be hard for schools isnt it? he was 3 in march.

Misdee the enrichment group at Ludwick are fanstantic at picking up on ASD and AS, they will decided what school the child should go to (with parents of course) I know a little boy who is at MLS with speech problems, Ludwick were the ones to suggest it to the mum. If he's only just turned 3 then there's still enough time to hopefully get things sorted out before he starts school. Ds1 got his dx at 3.5yrs. He didn't need a statement in the end but he would still have had time to get one, depending on the assessors of course. I don't know about the timescale for applying for special schools though so no help there I'm afraid.

When will his CDC assessment be? Your friend may find it a little easier to get help this time around. They tend not to use the "He'll talk when he's ready" line when the child is 3.

no idea when next CDC is. he has been seen at the CD clinic tho. i really must call her, but we're both so busy atm, and i have to be able to get home quickly its impossible really for now.
