sibling rivalry - sensory integration

Hi
I saw you mentioned on another thread in last few days about your OT doing a sensory integration prog, icnluding some sort of listening work. can you let me know more detials,particularly about what ever listening prog you di - was it therapeutic listening? (i am asking this re 10 yr old with aspergers)

Hi improving, my ds1 has sensory processing disorder and did listening therapy this year. You have special headphones and CD's with it and it is done twice a day for 30 minutes. Certainly worth a try.

Hi Improving slowly,
My dd hasn't started her listening therapy yet -should be any time now(I will definitely post updates when it happens).
She is going to do it because she has auditory processing problems eg she has difficulty in picking out 'key' words -usually when listening to instructions. As a result, she often misses important details etc.

The SI (sensory intagration) therapy she receives includes the 'Alert'programme -which teaches dd to recognise when she has more sensory information than she can deal with, or when she isn't receiving enough. She uses hand signals to let us know that she is having difficulties.The long term aim is for dd to adjust her surroundings/response until she feels ok, but it is early days yet and she needs a lot of support from us. It is starting to make a difference though, because she is more aware.

She also has a sensory diet, where she is exposed to a variety of stimuli, to try to de-sensitise her to some of the things which bother her. In her case, we have found she is very tactile-defensive, so we encourage her to touch new materials etc.
She is, conversely, a sensory seeker, too, so she has things such as chewy toys and a thera-ball to help with this.
