The LEA should send out a list with a proposed statement of all special schools. Ring and ask for one, it should contain private and non-maintained too.

Put a request in wtritng asking what schools your child would likely be accepted by if you were to opt for SN provision. We could have got a massive list but in relaity only 2 were open to us for reasons of location and place avaalbility.

Writng always good, to head of service if needs be.

At the worst end Is uppose you could request a list of schools with palces available under freedom of information act?

A word of caution: most LEA's expect midde functioning kids to 'fail' in MS before offering a SNU placement (am at the just-failed stage with ds3) so will be hard against a SNU palcement; also even if we geta list here we are not eprmitted to visit until a statement offering a palcement at that level has been awarded (we've just had ours through yesterdaya nd even though we visited under the old system,. we have to redo from scratch again)

Our LEA sends out a full list of SEN schools and schools with SEN units/support automatically as part of the process when they make an assessment. So then of course you have to look them all up on Ofsted etc. but at least you have somewhere to start.

I think that is part of some government advice on good practice. At the absolute minimum they should send you the list if you phone up and ask.

there is a list on our county council website, type in special schools in the search facility and it should come up. No idea how up to date it is though!
