Just started putting words together - is this normal?

My ds1 who is 2.5 has just started repeating and using 2 words together. Up till 3 weeks ago he just repeated and used single words but he has since been putting them together. However he puts a big pause between them at first which gradually reduces as he becomes more familiar with the phrase until it sounds more normal. As he is getting more used to using words together the pause is getting smaller even for new phrases. His diagnosis was that he may be borderline mild ASD , ADHD or Specific Language Impairment.
Guess the question I really want answered is whether this is typical of ASD or NT children when they first start putting 2 words together.
Thanks

my ds ASD and at 2.5 was only doing one word didn't do 2 words until about 2.8 and at 3.5 was talking in real sentences but he struggles with words sounds so has SALT for this so your ds sounds like his doing great 2-3 i think is 2-3 words sentences and 3+ 3-6 word sentences i believe cant remember exactly but im sure its in them barriers i know my ds caught up and is age appropriate now so your ds sounds great

its a confidence thing when they do it for a while and are sure its right then they will add the other word sounds right to me

My ds2 was the same when he started putting words together, he still does it now when he learns a new word. He is 3.5

To be combining at 2.5 is frankly brilliant - don't let the concern about pauses prevent you from opening a bottle of champagne!

I think it's quite positive - that even though he's having to think hard of the next word to say, he's not put off, he's willing to make the effort. It's great he's so motivated.

DS2 is doing this at 6 - but he is on the severe end of the spectrum - think your DS is doing brilliantly! Especially as the pauses are getting shorter - we still have a veeeerrrrry looooooong pause
