Something I don't understand.

A job ad can't discriminate, right? How come they can say "Driving licence essential."? I'm not ALLOWED to drive, so I'm being denied access to quite a few jobs, and I only just realised. It's annoying me because I'm looking for part time work at the minute and this is what I've hit a few times.

That's rough - I would have thought they could only specify driving license if driving was actually part of the job!

The job centre says that you cannot specify that some one drives/has a driving license unless driving is part of the job

what sort of jobs are you applying for? as would have thought it would be OK for them to say driving licence essential only if it was an essential function of the job to drive.

You're probably right about that. It's retail jobs I'm looking at....though I suppose that could involve driving. Driving is my one big "difference" if you know what I mean, so looking for jobs can be quite annoying.

oh I agree Lolli dh hits the same problem as he can't drive due to epilepsy.

I am quite lucky though really, I live close to lots of major cities, and I want to go into an industry where I could be studio based (telly production/editing) so trains could work, I'd just need to find cheap trains...and I'd be the first visually impaired student to graduate from media production at my uni :O

An employer can ask for someone who has a clean driving licence if they absolutely have to drive something. If the job can be done just as fast and effectively using public transport, then they can't demand the driving licence. But if it's visiting lots of houses during the day and/or delivering items which are bulky, then logically someone would have to drive. So then it's a 'reasonable' thing by them.
