DS (8) ASD does not get poorly! He hasnt had a day off school for illness in over 2 years. Last night he was sick. He has a temperature and keeps being sick. Ill DS i can cope with its the way him being ill is freaking him out im struggling with.
He keeps asking why is his head vibrating????
He is scared of his sick because it has not got food in and is worried it means he is going to die.
He cant understand that whilst he is hot he is shivering!
He doesnt understand he needs to drink water even though he keeps being sick.

how do explain it to him?

Oh poor ds! I hope he picks up soon.
My son (9 ASD) is very similar and cannot tolerate not being in full working order. He also thought he would die and cannot cope with illogical things like shivering! You could explain that the body needs to rest when we are poorly so it does things to get us to rest like making us dizzy/ head throb ( vibrate is so discriptive)/ shiver! The headache is to remind him to drink (sip). However the tummy does not know why it feels bad so empties everything out just in case! ( In olden days when were poorly it was often because we had eaten the wrong plants/berries - or whatever ds knows he has not eaten - but our tummies still react that way)
Ds has a burn and keeps trying to remove the dressing.! He pulls at - it hurts - he blames the dressing so pulls some more! I'm temted to tape a huge bag over his hand !
Sick kids are wearing!! (Hug)

thanks for the reply, he is still rather poorly, i did get him back to bed earlier and he did sleep but he is boiling hot and is scared to move cos he says he may sick his stomach up! We did have the 'am i dying' comment earlier which was hard to deal with but your explanations magso will help. Have promised to take him up for a little shower in a minute and then tuck him in his bed with a DVD although he is currently saying i need to carry him as he feels like his head is going to fall off and he will fall over it! He is so scared something is going to happen to him im tempted to sit with him all night to reassure him.

Poor Bonkerz DS

Dd1 (AS) was sick last month, she had a cough and was sick whilst having a coughing fit, she handdles sick alot better than me (one of my many phobias), i explained to her that she had something nasty (flem in her throat) that needed to come out to make her feel better so she was pleased when she was sick as she then thought she would be well enough for school.

I don't handle illness well at all and i quite often feel like im dying, sometimes it just feels like its going to last forever even though it will be over with in a day or so.

I hope he feels better soon.

thanks guys, marne i get the impression thats what DS thinks...that it will last for ever, he has just been sick again so the 48 hour policy means he cant go back to school till friday now which is upsetting him as he wanted to go swimming thursday! He is also panicking now incase he is sick again because friday is parents day when me and his nanna are going to spend day at school. Its not even like i can send him in anyway because he cannot lie for toffee so will tell them when he was sick and knowing him it would be time and description!!!!!!
He is now tucked up in bed again and im hoping he will atleast sleep for a few hours!

awww poor wee thing. and i'm sure you're tired too!

we've all had a bug for the last few days. whenever ds is going to be sick he says "mummy cuddle" or "kiss tummy" which ensures that i get covered in it bleuch

BONKERZ · 10/12/2008 12:01

thanks ladies, he is feeling better today, we went out for a little walk this morning to see if we could blow away some cobwebs, ended up buying him a dvd!
He has just eaten a jacket potatoe though so hopefully that will stay down and he will be back at school friday!
