staryeyed even sorry!

daisy5678 · 04/12/2008 20:35

The reasons why the school can't meet the child's needs from their own resources. Cos that's the only criteria for needing a statement!

Good luck.

I sent mine this week and it was very brief. Just said we want an assessment, ds has ASD and needs 1-1 support and that I was aware that they had to reply within 6 weeks or we could go to tribunal.
It's just really to get the ball rolling I think.

staryeyed · 04/12/2008 22:43

Oh ok. I just thought Id try to make sure that the request is not rejected my council are very tight it seems. Will send tomorrow. Good luck with yours Nattynoos and nikos.

I recently completed my second (applied for both boys in one year - ouch!) and my LEA included a guidleline and I basically followed it, ending up with about 6 sides detailing their problems and how they are affected in day to day life and how they do/would impede their education and how I believe additional support and resources would help. With DS1 I put particular emphasis on his impulsiveness.

DS1 has his statemement, now and while I argued successfully that stating he needed 50-100 regular and on-call support was ridiculous and they upgraded that to 75-100%, they didn't follow through with adequate funding for his very small school, so the school hs applied for an early review, which they involved me in. In this case, we focussed on health and safety and self care issues, since they've proved to be a huge concern and they're finding it impossible to supervise him properly when his support assistant isn't in in the late afternoon and we think his audit banding covering these areas is far too high. If your LEA works anything like mine, your letter needs to stress what your biggest concerns are, since your child's greatest need would affect the overall level of funding and support offered.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone.

Just to clarify Ds goes to a ASD nursey unit but cant stay there without a statement for next year.

oirvye = all that detail wasn't for the application surely. I thought at the beginning you just sent a letter saying you wanted an assessment.

ouryve · 05/12/2008 18:19

Ah - I thought the OP was meaning the parental view letter rather than the one asking to set the ball rolling in the first place. My mistake!

Had a call yesterday to say that he will be included in the panel which sits in January and they will be gathering evidence in the meantime. I did put in the letter the bit about the time limit of six weeks for them to reply (as given in the model letter in the link). Think this helps as they think you are a parent who knows their legal rights.

staryeyed · 06/12/2008 11:30

I was told by the people working with me to send of all the reports. I dont think they know what they are doing half the time. When the council comes back I will have to submit up to date reports because some of these are old.
