hiya just want to have a wee rant here,sorry.dd4 had more bloods done few weeks ago and was brilliant.now we have to get a urine sample for acids ect, have been trying to get her to potty sit ,but its no use.shes still in nappies and has a meltdown when we put her on one.have contacted her peadi about it and he says try for another week, then theyll bring her into ambalutory care and do a catheator or bag.bags arnt usely used as theres a contamination risk? and catheters are nasty(dont want that for dd4 at all).aaargh!!!!!help please, any ideas????

No help I'm afraid. We use the stick on bags, not much choice yet as DS still a baby, but we've never had a problem with them.

I can sympathise!! When we had to get a urine sample (when ds was younger)I ended up leaving nappy off and having a jug to hand!!It worked best whilst running the bath! Eventually we caught some! Sorry no other ideas!

thanks , looks like we are just going to keep trying.

we have to get wee from dd so we put a cotton wool ball in the nappy. Then stuff it in a 10 ml syrine and press the plunger and then there is wee

I think for acids the sample can be non-sterile as long as it isn't contaminated with poo, so the bag will be fine.

When I worked in neonatal care, we used the technique NMC talks of, and it was very simple.

COTTON WOOL -BRILLIANT am gonna try that, thanx coffee!!!

thats what dd had to do when she was in hospital the other week,we tried getting her to do a wee and she went ballistic (still in nappies and extreme toilet phobic)so they put cotton wool balls in her nappy and got one that way.

i know how distressing it is.

mumgoingcrazy · 24/11/2008 16:23

NMC, what a great idea. We've been battling with this one too, and that sounds brilliant.

we had to do one on friday at hospital couldnt go home untill she did it, but we took her nappie of following her till she did it, its a nightmare

morning girls!dd4 came down with v&d monday night so had to wait until it had cleared before we could do the cotton wool trick! shoved some in her nappy last night and it worked !!!! hallelugah ect, just got dh to drop it off at docs.wee(get it ? ha ha) only got about 5mls ,am worried that this might not be enough for all the tests.what do you think,ok ? or not?
