DS2 has CP and whenever he has a cold, can't cough up or blow out snot and mucous properly. He usually ends up being sick, but this still doesn't clear enough out to help him.
Has anyone got any tips to help him get rid of it?

We have the same problem here with dd2 (ASD), she has a nasty loose cough and very snotty nose. She hasn't been sick but close to it last night, we are using vapor rub and the plug in vaporiser (sp) to keep her clearer at night. Also i have proped up her materess on her bed.

Steam is also good.

Hope he feels better soon.

In France it is common to "clean out" babies and small childrens's noses with a sea salt spray. They don't like it much but the sprays are gentle and they do seem to remove the snot before it can go down to their chest. Don't know if something like that would work...?

Sorry, obviously I realise that your DS isn't a baby, I meant small kids that can't blow their nose v. well and he obviously falls into that category!

if he has mucous in his lungs it can help to lay him on his front (if he can) and gently work all over his upper back with slightly cupped hands, palms facing down to make a hollow soundon his back. if he can hum at the same time this will double the effect. it loosens the mucus, making it easier to cough up. it can also help to make him blow pieces of cotton wool from one side of the table to the next.

i had a chronic type of bronchitis as a child and this is what physio taught my parents.

thanks madmouse. contacted my physio today and she is making an appointment for me with the physio who specialises in this area. Will try your idea though
