after answer 'yes Mrs X' independantly in school on friday (via head switch and messagemate) for register, today dd indicated 'no' for the first time.
When asked if she liked the carer singing to her she made no response so I said 'so you didn't like X's singing?' Big smile and a yes mouth.
I aksed her several times. She made a choice lalalalalalala
Now they better give her that communication aid or I am gonna chain myself to something.

that's brilliant NMC!!

TheArmadillo · 15/11/2008 18:32

what a clever girl

needmorecoffee · 15/11/2008 18:42

gawds I wish I could find that doctor who said she'd be a vegetable.
But its given me more ammo for tues meeting to make them give her a communication aid. Its even more important she be allowed to speak!

Do you know about the lowtech Talking Mats system NMC? There are some videos to watch on the link.
They are amazing to work with.

RaggedRobin · 15/11/2008 20:51

heh heh! poor mrs x!!!!

madmouse · 15/11/2008 21:06

that is amazing NMC, it must be so great for you that dd is showing the world what you knew all along: that she is pretty clever

if you are refused that communication aid you need legal advice and fight it. pushed to its logical conclusion is becomes a human rights matter as she is entitled to express herself and I would say her integrity as a person is at stake here.

(end off rant, won't try to teach grandma to suck eggs )

misscutandstick · 16/11/2008 08:17

well done your DD! so pleased for you both!!! i agree it couldnt be clearer indication that she needs a comms device

PS really pleased to hear a little big ray of sunshine after last weeks horrendous nights. {{{HUGS}}}

needmorecoffee · 16/11/2008 08:33

talking mats look good but dd has no hand/arm function.
She's having loads of myoclonics/tonic jerks. Yesterday evening she had 100
I'm petrified they will regress her.

Well done, that's really nice to hear. I had to quote the Geneva Convention on Human Rights to get my DD her standing frame, I can find the exact paragraph if you'd like, she was able to stand using theequipment by refusing to fund the equipment they were denying her rights, sounds ridiculous but they found the money they didn't have before pretty quickly after that.

needmorecoffee · 16/11/2008 09:04

yes please. have meeting on tuesadat. But what they do is claim you are imagining your child has any intelliegnce and they are all 'experts' so know best
grrr

NMC (you will be soo waiting for this) keep a diary and make a note everytime dd communicates something like she did at school (yes Mrs X etc), it will soon add up and show that inside is a little girl wanting to talk

I argue human rights in terms of asylum and people from poor countries needing medical treatment here, but

art 8 of the Human Rights Act (which is what you need to quote now, the Geneva convention is part of British law) gives her the right to a private and family life. a phrase often used in this context is 'physical and moral integrity', ie the right to be a whole person. how can you be a whole person if you cannot speak (or worse, being denied the tools you need to speak)

needmorecoffee · 16/11/2008 11:33

ta muchly. I am sick of these 'experts' telling me crap about my own child. The SLT we are stuck with is still under the impression dd doesn't understand anything and refuses to re-assess her opinion. This of course affects the SLT dd gets as the SLT is an 'expert' and the LEA listen to her

I told you.Get in a private one then and ask her to write a report. See what she says.
