Reins for older children please help!!

I remember reading a thread on here several weeks ago with a website selling reins for older children in a form of a backpack with reins attached. Ive looked through several pages of threads and cant seem to find it.

C is now 5 and still runs in the road and runs off in town with no sense of danger and crashes into people. He has outgrown the normal chest reins and the wrist reins he refuses to wear and sits down in the street. He loves wearing a bag and it would look more grown up.

ds3 is tiny for his age and even he has outgrown the backpack size wise

I bought one from John Lewis website. Cost about £12.99 and they do free delivery. Will try to do a link here but never tried this before so don't know if it will work!
My son loves his backpack just hates walking!

Thanks for all your help, just found a back pack on ebay by some people called littlelife and it states its a bigger backpack for older children with the reins. Thanks for all your help. If this doesnt work, perhaps have to try a ball and chain!!!!

clippasafe 0115 921 1899 make the standard baby reins, however ,if you ring them, or a medic or social worker rings them on your behalf, they will custom make a harness and reins for a special needs child in any size you need and a range of colours. they simply need to know the waist/chest size you would like them to fit up to and the length of the sholder straps> think big ie over jumper and winter coat as they can allways adjust smaller. I help with a charity that supports children and adults with developmental disability issues, and we have used clippasafe reins on a number of ocasions, and special ordered them for children who have just outgrown the standard reins through to young adults with little concept of danger and poor blance skills. in all cases because they are funky colours and a good fit apart from a little inital stroppyness the children concerned have actualy enjoyed being on there reins and feeling secure and not being nagged to stay close (if you ask they will also make the walking reins strap and the anchor straps as long as you ask for them to be, so best to ring having worked out your measurments or with child and tape measure at hand and probably a helper ,wich can be very usefull if a child has problems sitting up in a chair as you can clip them to a normal chair for meals and homework etc with these) . the other company that ocupational therapist and social service will send you to his www.crelling.com wich is crelling harnesses for the disabled, these are ok but only come in black car seat belt type material and dont look as nice, allthough they work well, and there escape proof reins are great if you have a child who realy dosnt want to keep them on as they have the extra strap between the legs etc to make sure they stay in place, but more than alot of people would need.

hope that helps , let me know if you need more help or info, and yes dont worry what people say or what looks they give you, if you have a child whatever age who needs reins to be safe and secure, get properly made ones that fit well and establish a clear routine, so the child, siblings and friends understand why and when they will be required to be on them.

I have used standard reins on my girls when they were 5 and 7. Lucy has given good advice. Standard reins with buckles secure in the back and out of reach is the way to go. My girls adjusted to them and actually preferred wearing them. The reins gave them much more freedom yet kept them within limits. Hope this helps. Support in this area of parenting is always helpful.

Hiya everyone my son is 11 yrs old I'm wondering if they do the reins/safety harness for his age he's got special needs and learning difficulties and no awareness of the dangers he runs off alot also hits me while pregnant I've had to get the police involved I'm thinking of getting the reins/harness as it could help any advice is helpful many thanks xx

Crelling Harnesses are great and go the whole way from child to adult. They are also very good if you need something bespoke. We use their car harnesses for children with challenging behaviour which are great.
