I started a thread in Chat today about the length of the summer holiday period. It's had various replies and the feeling is split as to whether they are too long, about right, etc.

Just spotted this. I'd love to show my AS DS the beauty and complexity of this world, but his idea of beauty is a red blanket(anything red for that matter) and he adds his own complexity. LOL

Here's the basics...someone points out that the long summer hols can be a strain for SN families and then some kindly soul says that we can't bow to this small minority of families and that summer holidays are rosy and shiny and perfect....I believe it was posted by someone who lives in a little house...on a praire...

Well it was tempting to let rip but I didn't want SN to become the focus of that thread. I'm guessing that that perfect poster is not broad minded enough to think things through anyway.

Summer holidays are way too long when my 9 yr old asd goes back to school in September it can take him right up to the first half term before he settle down and gets any work done. He also can't understand why his dad who works isn't there for him.
It's not just a sn thing either his sis gets bored with all the freedom and now after 4 weeks can't wait to see all her friends at school.
One last thought my sons teachers all say if it wasn't for the summer holidays they probably wouldn't work in a school.

It depends on the type of SN- not all SN children have the same needs. My dd badly needs the summer holidays to give her aching body a break; she would need them to be longer. To her, getting a break from the worst of the pain means so much more than potential boredom. I am watching her grow stronger day by day- it's wonderful! It's not about living a shiny drean on the prairie; it's about being able to stay in bed until the worst of the pain has subsided.

Sorry cory - wasn't trying to get at people who like the hols, it's just the person who posted on the other thread wound me up a bit! TBH my ds loves the hols most of the time and although I find it hard to keep him amused/exercised I don't miss making packed lunches in the mornings!
