AUTISM - NOT holding ears!

There are so many posts relating to situations of noise being avoided by children with autism.

However, DS5 (2.2 preDx Autism/PDD) loves to make noise - he 'drops' and tips over everything, pushes stuff over, scrapes and bangs anything he can get his hands on. Chairs, toys, cups, plates, tins and his favourite - pan lids on the hard kitchen floor, especially when they do that 'rolling like a penny' thing, and get faster and faster just before they stop flat on the floor, IYKWIM. the noisier the better, it seems...

Not had his hearing checked, but fairly sure its fine. He does have some sensory issues: hates socks, hates being naked, high pain threshold, light aversion, loves 'touching' stuff (usually with tongue) to feel the texture. And licks everything!

can anyone shed some light? we're running out of paracetamol

My DS is the loudest child i have ever known.

he makes more noise alone than the rest of his class together.

but he doesn't like noisy situations....it's like he is oblivious to his own noise and overly sensative to that made by others.

Was just about to say the same as Mamazon about other peoples noise vs their own noise.

Also, where many autistic people hate loud noises, there are those that activly seek noise. Something to do with being over or under sensitive to sensory input.

DD1 also loves certain load noises, love to play music really load and will often turn the TV upto its max. Yet on the rare occation we go out shopping music playing in shops drives her to complete distruction!! its like she cant actually filter out all the differant sounds around her.

Noises like the hoover and the washing machine also scare her, at the moment with it being the school hols our house has only been hooved through 3 times in 3 weeks , i just dont think the distress it causes for her is worth it!!

Ds1 combines the 2. He's not that bothered by loud noises although he hates certain pitches. He covers his ears but not in response to loud noises. He is very noisy himself!

DS1 loves the sound of his own screaming at the moment - it seems to be quite a release for him. Unfortunately we don't live in the middle of nowhere and my own nerves are frayed so should imagine my neighbours are going to be banging on the door any day. I have noticed that he hates it when the younger too are whining or crying though but then so do I so not sure if this is a noise thing or an annoyance thing.

Our OT says it's common for children to be hypersensitive to some things and hyposensitive to others - even within the same sensory area iyswim. Fire alarms don't bother DS2 at all - but a baby crying at the other end of the road will make him put his fingers in his ears.

My 3 year old and 5 year old are like that too. My 20 month old seems to be the same.
So the holidays are so far proving to be a testing time to say the least.
My 3 year old ds is the gentlest and the quietest of the three, for today anyway. The other two like to bash things on people aswell. Today I have had wooden bricks thrown at me and been punched and kicked. They have gone out for a bit with my long suffering dh, who came home from work early. It is so quiet!
I am hoping they will grow out of it soon.
My 5 year old is what can only be described as sensation seeking, where as my 3 year old likes to avoid it as much as possible. My 20 month old is the same as my 5 year old.
I need a much bigger house!

My 9 year old son with asd was terrified of walking down a busy main road when he was 2 and would just scream, also he hated the hoover wherever he was in relation to it, after I had switched it off he would cuddle it and stroke it as if to say its ok now. His sister crying would also upset him immensly. Over the years we have realised that it is noises from many sources such as several cars, buses on the road or a disco with music and people talking or a funfair which upset him the most.
He is very very noisy himself, squealing and giggling most of the day but he doesnt like the tv too loud and will switch it off when it gets loud.
