Dyspraxia and Geometry

DS is nearly 10

He has Dyspraxia

He has always had problems with Geometry and right angles

Is this the same with other Dyspraxics?

He does seem to have a problem with 2D and 3D shapes

Can anybody help please?

Yes could be

My DS3 (ages 16)is dyspraxic and suffers from associated dyscalculia (the numerical equivalent of dyslexia).
He does have difficulty with geometry-dyspraxia can cause problems with spatial awareness and dyspraxics can have problems visualising things.
Does your DS have any problems with other areas of Maths?

I just asked my DS (17) who has dyspraxia & he said no, he doesn't have a problem with geometry. Dyspraxia has different effects on different people, I've noticed.

I think most of his maths is good

mental arthimatic is very slow

times tables were hard for him to learn

But do not think he has dyscalcula

his dyspraxia is very body awareness, balance hand eye co-ordination sort of thing. amounst other things

it is hard for him to work out how to climb over things like gates or walls

is associated dyscalculia just little bits of maths?

He never puts numbers the wrong way round

problems with time sometimes

If is 2.25pm working out what is 1 hour and 50 minutes ahead IYSWIM

Tiggiwinke,I am worried that my ds (8) shows signs of having this combination,can I ask at what stage your son was diagnosed and how you went about this etc also what help does he get.

ie. can it be that only some parts of maths can cause a problem?

Kanga-Yes, some parts of maths are more difficult than others.
He can do things like data collection and graphs;
However there are problems with:
geometry
algebra
times tables(still does not know them)
telling the time and associated questions
multiplication and division
mental arithmatic
Philly-my son had difficulties all through primary school, but was not diagnosed with dyspraxia until he was 9.Despite my repeated requests for extra help for him with Maths since starting secondary, it was not until he was 15 that I eventually got him properly assessed for dyscalculia.This was mainly because his performance in Maths was so poor compared with his other subjects-he was in the top group for eveything else but far behind in Maths.(in fact his year 9 SATS in Maths were worse than his year 6 results)
The school paid for him to be assessed by the Dyslexia Institute.
He now gets help once a week form a specialist teacher who comes into the school.
But it is too little, too late!
I would advise asking for your son to be assessed through his school as soon as possible.Dyscalculia is becoming much more widely recognised now and there are several oganisations who will do the asessment (a search through google should bring some up-sorry, no good at links!

My 13 yearold DD is Dyspraxic. No she doesn't have any problems with Geometry. She has some problems with mental arithmatic as although she knows the answers, has difficulty in writing them down quickly.
