We got a diagnosis today

dd3, 5 has been dxd with Aspergers by the Paed today. Been expecting it really and hopefully this will be the start of him getting the full input at school. School have been brill coping with him so far but the move to Year 1 in September is going to be one hell of a challenge.

Hi IWF, we have suspected it for about 3 years or so but the docs only really suggested it seriously last year after being a "naughty" child at playgroup. We have got used to how he is and we just get on with it - the tough thing is educating strangers.

ds has also got the prospect of his legs being put in plaster in September for his super-tight hamstrings and calf muscles due to his continualy toe walking.

Are you getting your ds statemented - are you going down that route yet?

My DS is also just 5 and got a diagnosis of Aspergers last month. We are currently dealing with some very difficult behaviour associated with transition to year 1

DS was statemented in may, before his diagnosis, as when he started in reception last year he spent most of his time refusing to enter the classroom and screaming in the corridoor. He now has 1:1 support with 2 very nice TAs and school have been very supportive. We have been amazed by his progress - still a bumpy ride, but he is proving to be a brave and bright little boy.

Good luck with your journey. If you don't have a statement already then definitely request that the LEA carries out a statutory assessment.

We have been advised to go down the statementing route in order to get whatever additional support he needs on top of what he already gets.

Worst times for him are school plays for instance. He cannot cope with the change with parents being in the school, hates the noise and stands with his hands over his eyes and/or ears. That and poking, kicking other children standing near him and looking everywhere except to the front of the hall. He hates touch too and dislikes others being in close proximity to him.

Yes, we have difficulty with school plays, or anything that requires dressing up - he just doesn't 'get' it. We have sports day on Thursday and he is already getting stressed and saying he wont do anything. He likes the idea of me being in school but only because he thinks I will take him home.
I dread these events.

We got 16 hours 1:1 support in our statement which is topped up to full time from the SA+ budget. This is proving invaluable as the TAs are spending alot of time preparing him for transition. he has been taking photos of his new classroom and teacher today. We are planning to try and extend this support next year so that he has formal support for the lunch break, as he will no longer be in the reception playground. I have visions of him telling off the Yr 6 boys and getting himself into all sorts of trouble.
