quick question on mildly odd behaviour

DS5 is not so good on eye contact.

A couple of days ago (on a really good and "with it" day) he asked to be picked up (gestured with arms - a first!) and he covered the bottom half of my face with his blanket (his blanket goes EVERYWHERE with him - a does a spoon, but i digress), just so that my eyes were visible. He spent about a full minute checking out each eye in turn, giving it full concentration - I remained still and quiet to let him have full concentration. After he had finished he wriggled to get down again.

I still have very little eye contact and he hasnt been interested since...

Anyone any idea what he was doing?

how old is he? toddlers do this often, as does ds3 who is almost 5 but not nt. it sems to be a combination of deliberately narrowing focus so not to be distracted then getting 'stuck in that moment

great about the gesturing
