My so has just turned 3 years old son is at the start of an autism diagnosis for the following reasons:
Speech delay: he can say around 100 words and some consistent two word sentences but he mainly uses echolalia. But is constantly babbling. Uses hand holding to direct us but can point to what he wants.
Social: He prefers to play alone. Including not wanting to take part in circle time at nursery unless it is something he is interested in.
Some sensory issues such as prefering to be bare foot, struggles with changing from PJs to normal clothes in the morning, can be emotional (but this has coincided with turning 3 so in my eyes is normal toddler behaviour).
However, he does not display "classic" traits e.g:
- He responds to his name constantly.
- Has good understanding - can follow basic instructions.
- will point and things and look at things we point to.
- Makes strong eye contact.
- Not bothered by loud noises/light etc.
- No fussy eating - always been a good eater.
- Always seeking hugs and comfort.
- Can recognise emotion e.g. sulking when told off.
- Does not struggle with transitions.
- Tantrums do not last longer than 5 or 10 minutes.
- No repetitive behaviour.
I know it will not change my little boy but I am upset that he has to go throught this ans so worried his speech will not develop and I will never have a conversation with him and what the future may hold.
Will he be conversational? Will he be ok in mainstream school? Will he make friends? Will he live independently?
Currently seeking some private speech and language therapy whilst we wait for NHS appointment but any reassurace would be massivelt appreciated to calm this very worried mummy 😔
