Told DS about his dx today

DH had a teacher waiting for him at school today when he went to collect dcs (third time in a week)
DS, who has just been dx'd with AS had been in a fight in the playground, recent problems had been use of bad language, DH told them about the dx the first time they spoke to us.
We were having a talk with him about his behaviour and it just came naturally into the conversation. DH was reluctant at first but it just seemed so natural.
DS very matter of fact, shrugging his shoulders.A book from the NAS arrived today, by coincidence, "Aspergers, what does it mean to me" and we had a look at it together.
DS's only question was "is that what Einstein had?".
Feel reassured at another milestone crossed.

Glad you have crossed this bridge unfit, and that you feel relieved. I think telling dx is generally a good thing. Is your ds 11?

Since dx and starting a group for social skills at camhs, I have been able to explore and discuss AS much further with ds.

I found it was so much easier to deal with ds's issues once we'd come clean about the reasons. It's harder when you're covering up and sort of making excuses. I always feel you can't start to solve a problem until you know what it is and I think this is true for our children. We need to be open with them about their difficulties, what's unacceptable socially and how they can learn to find ways of dealing with problems.

Glad you've told him, hope he comes to terms with it easily. Be prepared though, most kids go through a phase of "I can't help it I have Aspergers" when first told about it, but it's a stage they go through and it works out best in the longrun.

I overheard DS2(AS) saying to his brother "I can't help it I have asthma" the other day, I think I need to have another chat with him.

LOL, my dad has taken to saying "I must have Aspergers then" lately whenever my mum's cross with him! We think he probably does (the same overconfident superior being type of AS as my DS).
