ASD child stealing food

Got a call from school to say our 12yo DS with ASD / DCD and sensory processing issues has been stealing food from the cafeteria. Pretty mortified. I am away with work at the moment so will talk to him when I get home to try and understand why, but how would you approach this?

Yes it is mainstream. They are putting in place some restorative coaching (as opposed to a day in isolation which is the usual punishment for stealing). He has been given negative behaviour points (which he is devastated about, its one of the things that really worries him)
