Potty training - non verbal

I’m looking for advice for my DIL and DS their darling daughter is 3 and has a range of symptoms pointing to autism. At the moment she is non verbal, though we feel that over the last few weeks she has started saying one or two words but still doesn’t recognise her name.

When we saw them at Christmas my DIL mentioned the problem they have with potty training, she’s tried (they have older children so it’s nothing new) but with DGD not communicating she’s finding it really hard.

is there any advice anyone can give.

Does DGD communicate in non-verbal ways? I think the answer to that will influence next steps.

What happens when SIL/DS try regularly taking DGD to the toilet?

I have a non verbal asd child and my advice is to wait. She's only 3.

I trained my son when he was 5. Technically he wasn't 'ready' but we did it by a schedule and did it that way. it took months but we didn't stop. At 3 we just got him to sit on the potty and that's it. He is now 8 and just goes to the toilet on his own and when I ask him to. I would stop worrying that she's 3 and not potty train, these skills will be delayed. A neurotypical child potty training target is 3, asd is later. Being non verbal doesn't mean she can't train but it will be later and take longer.
