Stimming changes

Hi,
has anyone had experience with stimming coming and going and also stims almost cycling through? My son (2 for reference) has suspected autism. One thing that’s always confused me are his stims. He seems to have a couple weeks of lots and lots of stimming and then all of a sudden it’ll become extremely minimal. Then after a few weeks it returns. This repeats often. Also he’s had a lot of stims over the past year or so such as hand flapping, head shaking, eye tracking whilst spinning, spinning, eye tracking whilst walking along edges or walls ect, rubbing head across floors, jumping whilst flapping, finger flicking, repetitive clapping and more. They appear to be on a cycle and he’ll do 2-4 at a time and then they’ll fade and old/new ones will replace them.
has anyone experienced similar? It does make me wonder why this happens. There never seems to be a real trigger although he seems to mostly stim when he’s happy but even when he’s not he’s still seeming happy just maybe not as much but without a clear cause or trigger.
thank youu

Some find their DC’s stims ebb and flow both in the frequency and the form.

stimming can be used to regulate when the sensory system is out of whack. If your child is dysregulated, they may be stimming more than usual. If they are fairly well regulated, they may not feel the need. I say ‘may’ as all autistic kids are different. My DS stims practically every waking moment. (Also, is he doing more subtle stims that you are just not picking up on? Staring at shiny things? My son went through a phase of playing with toy doors - open/close/open/close for hours , I didn’t realise it was a stim…)

My DD seems to pick up and drop different stims. At the moment she is shouting - a really harsh shouting shrieking noise. Really hoping this one is a phase...
