Respecting Privacy.

My social workers have been so brilliant. My ds is profoundly deaf. We only have one toilet in the house and it isnt easy to have a bolt on the door in case he locks himself in when angry and breaks things turns on taps, floods etc...
They came last night and gave me a portable doorbell. I take the press bit in the bathroom with me, the box part stays on the shelf on the landing. If Wilfred wants to come into the bathroom(or bedroom) he has to now knock on the door, i get out of bath/bed put on dressing gown/towel, then press the button. The noise then goes off outside and then a flashing light so he knows he can come in!Genius!! I do have to say though that the noise is deafening! He can hear it with his aids in!!

What a great idea! My ds locked himself in the bathroom on holiday and got very upset because he couldn't unlock it - fortunately managed to calm him down enough to talk him through unlocking. Very scary!

Isn't that fantastic? Often it's the simplest ideas that are the most effective.

I use a doorbell in my ds's bedroom with the button at the bottom of the stairs, to call him down when tea's ready. If I call up with words he totally ignores me, but loves the novelty of the bell and comes straight away. And not a social story or reward chart in sight!

When my ds is in his bedroom i bang on the ceiling with a broom handle If he's not in a good mood he'll bang back on the floor at me. It certainly saves my arthritic knees going up and down two flights of stairs!!

my bro and I both had bells in our room as kids, mum got sick of calling, calling and then coming up to find us with head phones on.

Could just as esily been little lights, all ran off 9v batteries- I built them.
