did you pick up on the bit where at the followup a few years later there were 8 kids who "lost" the ASD DX, 2 of whom IIRC were rediagnosed with developmental language disorder? I pricked up my virtual ears at that section..

Yes I thought that was the most interesting bit! The paper doesnt pick up on it presumably because the study was not designed to (and therefore cannot) answer the questions we all want answered. The trouble is no placibo controlled trial could be ethical, although I suppose you could compare rates of 'loss dx of asd' between 2 (or more) different interventions.

Read the article. Well, as well as I could, I sort of struggled with the mean charts and other data. It did seem to back up that Ds1 is ASD, things like his pretend play skills (there but not often and very basic for his age), his difficulty empathising (compared to his peer and age group, obviously) and his limited ability to do joint attention (better than it was but still not as much as "typical" children) added to his delayed and often disordered language are some of the things that point to this.
