Gestalt processing language and ASD, worth applying for DLA?

So my nearly 4 year old is speech delayed and learns chunks of language, copying phrases from TV and conversations, can’t have a 2 way conversation, all comfirmed by speech and language lady. Nursery SENco have noticed repetitive traits and other things and it’s quite clear he has ASD but no one has said the word to me yet. We’re on the waiting list for children development centre. EHCP assessment was declined and nursery seem OK about this, they said the school will put support in place when he starts in September. Is it worth me applying for DLA?

Just seen you post and thought I’d comment. DLA isn’t about diagnosis but all about care needs. If you can evidence that your 4 year old needs more supervision, more care needs/attention than a child of similar age then yes definitely apply.

It’s all about how his needs affect his daily life compared to a typical child his age.

I would say it’s definitely reasonable to and appropriate to apply. There are many guides to help you complete the form and groups on Mumsnet and facebook to also help you.

I would start by gathering evidence. So things like SENCO reports. The speech therapy reports, any reports from nursery, does he have a 1-1 at nursery for example and take it from there.

I would also say it’s really hard to fight for your child and advocate for them as there are so many hurdles in place. Also waiting lists if you’re going through NHS are so long so don’t wait for anyone else to talk to you. Get the ball rolling and get the refferal for autism in place. Have a look at RIGHT TO CHOOSE. This can reduce the waiting list for Autism assesment.

good luck

DLA is based on needs rather than diagnosis.

You have nothing to lose by applying for DLA other than the time it takes to complete the form. The Cerebra guide is helpful when completing the form.

Did you appeal the refusal to assess? If not, are you still within the appeal window?

If you haven’t already, speak to the school’s SENCO.
