Hi,

how did you support your DC whilst on the SALT waiting list? DC is 2.6 and has less than 20 words - the majority of them are animal noises and very few practical/useful words. They don’t have any food/drink/activity words. Will make a vocalisation for ‘car’ but no other toy words. Would say he has situational understanding. Will point and has started to point out objects of interest recently but will hand lead for what he wants. I’ve just got him a visual timetable and flash cards on a rubber chain to take out and about for now and next. I use simple language/narrate/read to him. Are there any other ideas or resources you found helpful? Is there anything you can nursery to do? They make the right noises whenever I try and talk to them but nothing ever materialises. Thanks

Useful resources are:

Hanen - more than words
The declarative language handbook
An early start for your child with autism.

There are some excellent resources on the Hereford and Worcestershire SALT pages. Have a look at the "Resources to help at home" section, especially the "Early Communication resources","first words", "Total communication" and "balancing comments and questions".
