Help needed with food.

Ds2 has always been terrible at eating would only eat fruit didn't even eat that until he was 12 months.He is now licking everything for ages before he will eat it it's driving me mad .He is also taking an hour to eat a simple meal and needs constantly reminding to eat.He has also started refusing to eat infront of anyone other than us .What is going on with him.
The fact that he has been put on a dairy free diet this week is making things even worse.

Why has he been put on a dairy free diet?

He has been put on the diet because of disgusting nappies 6-7 times a day.
I just don't know how to help him at playgroup this week I could only get him to eat by letting him go in the other room away from everyone but me.
The diet does seem to be helping we are down to 1-2 nappies a day and they are more normal.
Just knowing what to give an already fussy child is proving very difficult.
