ASD son 5yrs; his teacher reports to me that he “looks through her when he’s talking to her” and often “has a blank expression when stimming”
Is this common? What’s she getting at by saying this?

Yes, it can be common.

It could be for a number of reasons such as zoning out, inattentiveness, atypical eye contact, processing difficulties…

I would speak to the teacher and SENCO about what the teacher means. It could be they are just raising it as an observation but it could also be they need more training and guidance about autism and how to support DS.
