Eligibility for mobility DLA at 3?

I'm wondering whether my child will be eligible for the mobility part of DLA at 3?
At the moment she is 2.5 and can take a few steps independently if prompted but probably wouldn't be classed as walking. She has hypotonia and we are waiting for a genetics appointment to investigate the underlying causes so there is still a lot of uncertainty about her future development, how mobile she will be and whether she will need mobilty aids once she outgrows her buggy. Do I wait until she is close to 3 and see how her development progresses before applying for DLA if she is eligible or apply earlier? I know there is a long waiting time. What would they class as not walking well enough at 3 to qualify for high rate DLA?

At 3, only high rate mobility can be awarded. There are various ways of being eligible for that. One of them is unable or virtually unable to walk. You can see the requirements here. You would need to evidence every point on the virtually unable to walk flowchart. If DD can only take a few steps, that would meet the criteria. Although you may have to appeal, many with young DC do. You should be sent forms to complete. If that doesn’t happen, you can call to request them. Be aware, there is the possibility the care element may change.

25 weeks is what is told but average wait times seems to be between 20 - 21 weeks

@Macca04 most claims are taking around 20-25 weeks. Some slightly quicker, some slightly longer.
