Good news re: SALT :)

I don't know if you all remember but have been having problems with dd getting the SALT she needs as the school have been unable to fill the position once the old SALT left.
Thankfully they have now recruited a new SALT, who is lovely and saw dd on a summer SALT course we did 2 years ago.
The really good news is that dd will now be receiving 2 lots of social skills SALT groups per week . I am over the moon as I know that is what dd needs as in all other areas of language she has really progressed. I am also really happy that we now have a permanent SALT and it's even better as I know her from before and she is lovely

Really Eulalia? So you haven't had any SALT for ds yet. That is so out of order

He's had the assessment but won't get any till around March which will make it nearly 2 years since he was first referred. We just happen to live in one of the worst areas in the country. He's got better mostly by himself but is still far behind. I hope the therapy will help him to make proper friends at school as at the moment he has none at all. How is your dd with friends?

Eulalia - I just don't think it's fair. Obviously dd will get more than an average ms school as it is specialised for a reason. Infact it is such a lovely school!
Dd does have friends but her best friend a boy in the unit. They love each other. That's what I love about the school is that she is 1 of 8 children with communication difficulties. The school are working so hard on helping dd make friends and sustain them. Dd is happy to initiate conversation and social interaction but due to the language disorder finds conversations hard!
IIRC your ds is at mainstream with support?
I still think he should have had something by now! Have they given you any home programme to do? I know that Jaysmum snet a link to the Blacksheep website which is great for social skills. I'll try and find the link for you

I have had a look and infact may buy some for dd. Although I did buy her a language book and the school said it was too heavy as she gets all the therapy at school. They said to continue taking her to the park and after school clubs to encourage natural social skills

Thanks for the help Blossomhill. No we weren't offered anything else. He is at a very small mainstream, just 9 in the class and has auxilliary support. He's done really well there so far. He gets on well with the other kids, plays well (in his rather restricted way) and they sort of 'look after' him but what I'd count as a proper friend would be after school and no-one comes round apart from the odd much older girl who I think really come to visit dd! The after school club isn't running just now due to lack of help (all this new paperwork - Disclosure Scotland doesn't help) and other clubs are a 6 mile drive away. And I don't knopw if they'd work as he can't play football and doesn't join in with organised things anyway. Plus its not easy with dd and another on the way.

We decided against a school with SN unit as it meant a long bus journey and away from the village kids. Here the school is within walking distance.

I should be going on the EarlyBirds Plus course in March and I think that will help with a lot of things, eg how to discipline him (a bit of an issue at the moment!)

Sounds as the though it's the right school. Dd's school sounds as though it would be good as well as they have a high children with Spd. Dd does 30% unit and 70% mainstream - fully supported! The extra bonus (we didn't even think as didn't know dd had difficulties then) is that the SALT is our nearest school, only 5 minutes away! Ds goes to a school 1 road away as without sounding awful dd's school has over 60% special needs and I just didn't think that was right for ds!

We have the behavioural as well but dd is having a calm, co-operating period at the moment. We are taking her to Bibic in March for a 3 day assessment so looking forward to that as it is a holistic type therapy that is used and given to you as a home programme,
