Hi looking for advice on my 3 year old I am wondering if he is on the spectrum I myself have ASD. (My son is currently on a waiting list to be assessed)

He is only talking small amounts of words using mostly only singular words and repeating the same word even when out of context because it is something he loves and enjoys and cannot say a a whole sentence. Although he is extremely intelligent and switched on as he can understand everything you say to him. (He’s had a hearing test and his hearing is fine)

I am also struggling with potty training he knows how to use the toilet I managed to get him to do this for around about a week but will not even attempt it now, so he is still in nappies He is just point blank refusing to even try. (I’ve tried reward chart, picking out his own new underwear, bought numerous potties and toilet steps to encourage him)

He sometimes hits out or headbutts at other adults and children as a way of communicating and when he doesn’t know how to interact, he has thrown things broken numerous items in our household and thrown objects in school setting. He also hits himself in the face. (This is becoming dangerous as obviously I am concerned about him hurting himself or another child, he has caused injuries to my face broken nose)

He has no sense of awareness or danger and would happily run out into a road if I let him or just run off (obviously I wouldn’t) we use reigns and a pushchair sometimes for him for his own safety.

He is extremely busy and cannot keep still for very long unless he is really engaged in the activity he is doing but will become distracted not long after he is constantly on the move needing constant supervision.
There is so much more I could go into detail about but these are my main concerns at the moment.

Is there anyone on here that could give me any advice or maybe is going through or been through a similar situation please? And how long was the waiting time for an assessment?
thank you in advance to anyone that may give me any advice.

Is he seeing a speech therapist?
My son's speech was similar at that age and he still repeats now but has improved massively.

Potty training, my son didn't train until he was 4, 6 weeks before starting school. He just had no interest what so ever. Charts etc didn't phase him.
I would say wait until you feel he's ready again and try again.

Regarding the hitting, sorry I don't have experience in this but Do you have a weighed blanket?

My son also likes to be busy and won't stay engaged for long at all unless he's really into it. ADHD has been mentioned to me before regarding this.

Our first assessment was in 2023 and we waited 4 month, extremely lucky. But they said they wanted to give him more time to develop, he was 3. We are currently in the process of applying for another assessment.

Have you applied for DLA?
