My ASN grandson is starting school soon and struggles with the feeling of shoes/trainers on his feet. Does anyone have any suggestions for comfy school suitable shoes?

we love start rite shoes! You can always find lots on Vinted if you wanted to get a pair and see how he goes first.

Is there any pattern to which shoes he tolerates better or worse? I'm just thinking it's quite individual what bothers different people. Width, height, stiff sole, stiff body, how adjustable the straps are, anything?

If it's all shoes, he might do better with a 'barefoot' shoe, as they are usually soft and flexible, as well as wide enough not to squish his toes. https://www.bgreatershoes.com/collections/school-shoes are supposed to be good, and more affordable than many barefoot shoes. Happy Little Soles (https://www.happylittlesoles.co.uk/) have a good selection, and if you email them, they are usually happy to chat through what might suit a particular child, but most of their shoes are quite a bit more expensive than the BGreater ones.
