Do any of you have experience of having an autistic child that has seizures? My son was seen at a and e today due to a first seizure and the possibility of diagnosing epilepsy is being discussed at a specialist clinic.

He's 6 and has always slept terribly , we're thinking it could be due to seizures as he tends to wake with a huge burst of energy , much the same as he was when he came around after his seizure today.

I'm interested to see if anyone has any information to share while we wait for his appointment.

Hi. My DS is 13 & has autism & epilepsy (also ADHD & asthma). In his case, it is agreed that he started having seizures due to autism & puberty.

He started having seizures just over a year ago. Diagnosed pretty quickly after MRI & EEG & given medication. Outgrows the dose periodically then is given more. Changed meds once (Carbamazepine to Levetiracetam) as were not preventing seizures & were having side effects (behaviour & concentration were the ones which concerned the paediatrician).

We are going through a rough patch now as he's having more seizures & longer than before, but hopeful this is just down to him growing & new dose needing to kick in.

I hope your DS is ok & you get answers quickly.

Thank you for your response , we saw a consultant last week and eeg , mri and genetic testing have been ordered in order to diagnose and medicate correctly. We're terrified but glad that our son is being looked after so well.

I hope you are able to find the correct dosage for your son and that things settle down for you all , and also that you find some time for yourself. It's so hard having a child with complex needs.
